Frequently Asked Questions
What type of Pilates do I teach?
STOTT PILATES - a contemporary, anatomically-based approach on the teachings of Joseph Pilates, updating them to include what we now know about the body and how it works. It involves controlled exercises performed on a mat or using specially designed resistance equipment, such as the Fitness Circle and the STOTT PILATES Reformer. The repertoire of hundreds of exercises is designed to tone, elongate and strengthen muscles, while improving body awareness and posture, and relieving stress. With an emphasis on breath, core conditioning and body awareness, STOTT PILATES is a safe and effective way to stretch, strengthen and streamline your body. The low-impact neuromuscular system of exercise in STOTT PILATES yields significant results and feels good too.

Yoga vs. Pilates - What is the difference?
Yoga and Pilates are the two most popular types of mind-body exercise classes. They share similar principles - coordinating the breath with mindful movement; control and concentration; and a low impact nature.
The emphasis of Pilates exercises is to is strengthen the “Powerhouse” or core of the body - the deep abdominal muscles, buttock muscles and the muscles around the spine. This focus on core stabilization that makes you stronger from the inside out is unique to Pilates.
Pilates has one basic style of breathing, which is called “ribcage breathing.” The purpose is to stabilize and protect your spine while you are in different positions by holding your abdominal muscles tight but still allowing you to take deep breaths by expanding the ribcage. Yoga, on the other hand, has many styles of breathing for many different purposes.
Pilates strives to develop a graceful and fluid rhythm or ‘flow’ as you perform repetitions, and move from one exercise to another.
Another major difference is that the Pilates technique not only has a full complement of matwork, but it incorporates work with small equipment including the Fitness Circle, thera-bands, light weight body bars, etc. and the special spring resistance equipment such as Pilates reformer machines.
Do I have to be fit to do Pilates?
No. Pilates is suitable for almost everyone, from the high performance athlete to people with a range of health problems.
